A quick tour of Civic Center Eats, The Salvagetti Party, and that other party you may have heard about!
Last week was a big week for street food in the Queen City, dear readers. A quick recap of two small events, and then the moment you’ve all been waiting for…
Civic Center Eats
Always a treat, Civic Center Eats! I finally broke down and tried the insane Moko Loco from The Steamin’ Demon, and have to say, the crazy is in the food. It’s tasty, for sure: rice, topped with Watercourse’s divine veggie gravy, a veggie patty, a fried egg, and avocado. Delicious, but also dangerous. If I were an 18 year old dude, hammered in my dorm kitchen at 3 am, this is exactly what I’d hope someone would put in front of me. As it is, I’m a sometimes-sober considerably older woman without a hummingbird metabolism. It was tasty as hell, but equally difficult to eat in 90+ degree temps. Or maybe that’s just me. Is it just me?! In other news: I can’t get enough of Sugar Lips Mini Donuts! I know. I’m conflicted.
Salvagetti’s one-year-in-the-new-building party!
Thanks to Scott and the Salvagetti crew for this awesome event on Thursday night. The focus was bikes! bikes! bikes! but there was plenty of food to be had! Steubens, The Cupcake Truck, the Steamin’ Demon, and Basic Kneads Pizza were on hand to help those of us who were taking advantage of the FREE beer (yes – FREE beer!) from Great Divide stay on our feet.
The Justice League of Street Food’s inaugural ball
As mentioned on Saturday, the Justice League’s first big party was a raging success. I get the feeling that they didn’t anticipate quite this crowd! Hundreds of people streamed in, and by the time I got there around 7 or 7:30, there was a line about 10 deep waiting to be let in to the lot where the trucks had circled. By the time I left, the line had grown to well over 50. But folks were having fun all night long. A deejay was spinning tunes, and Great Divide and Infinite Monkey Theory were pouring adult beverages for all. Lawn games were available, but the space was crowded enough that there weren’t many folks playing.
We made our way in and found a friend, photographed below, at the front of the line for Pinche Tacos. The wait to get to the front of the line was 20 minutes, but her order only took 3 minutes to come up once ordered. A 3 minute wait?! With lines around the corner?! That’s some awesome street food ninja shit right there! And as you can tell by the smile on her face, those were some rad asada tacos. Her only complaint? She wished “The Donut Lady” was there. Sugar Lips, are you listening?!
So, it was crowded (parking and food lines were both a problem), but hell! There was beer and awesome food and music. My only recommendations: More vendors, better parking, and a bigger space. The Justice League has proven they can draw the crowds, but they’re gonna have to make a few adjustments, I think, to keep ’em coming back at that rate.
Regardless: Huge thanks to all 7 of the Justice League vendors for a job well done, and a huge thanks to the purveyors of fine adult beverages for enriching the experience as well!
