If you’ve been following any of the Denver street food vendors on Facebook or Twitter, and if you’ve read this post here, you know that it’s a challenging time for street food vendors. Chicago Louie’s has had the cops called on the Paddy Wagon (insert irony joke here) twice and has been asked to move even though nobody is sure what zoning laws The Paddy Wagon is, or – more likely – isn’t violating. Clementine, the original Denver Cupcake Truck, has been locked up in her room for weeks like a misbehaving teenage girl, even though again, nobody’s sure what she did wrong. Happily, she has been able to sneak out for some parties (insert joke about my own misspent youth here).
City Hall Meeting on Jan 26: Be There or Be Square!
On Wednesday the 26th (that’s 2 days from now!), the Denver City Council’s committee on Business, Workforce, and Sustainability is convening for their regular meeting, and the only topic on the agenda this week is a discussion of the guidelines that dictate how, when, and where street food vendors can do business.
I won’t go naming names or pointing fingers at any specific professional association, but the word on the street is that there may be some organized opposition to our beloved street food vendors in the room that day. It’s hearsay, but I trust my source on this one. In anticipation of that, several of the vendors have asked DenverStreetFood.com to encourage as many of our readers, their fans, to get downtown and pack the room. Let the city know that this emerging business model has inspired a new brand of food fiend in this town. These vendors have created restaurants that reach out across the city and build an enthusiastic vibe of civic pride. We know City Hall doesn’t want to quash that. Let’s help them figure out how best to support it instead!
