Who said picnics were for summer!? Sure, it’s February and we still have some winter ahead of us, but if you keep up with street food vendors you know the weather is braved and people are fed. Car picnic time!
Recently, in the mood for some street fare, I checked the Facebook (lovingly known as FB) and Twitter pages of Food Truck Warrior member Street Eats to see where they were. I headed to Littleton with a friend and a hungry belly.
The snow was falling, the temps dropping and Rich and business partner, Sharyn, were packing up when we arrived but they were kind enough to make me two of their specials and most popular items: Shrimp Skewers w/Chimichurri Sauce and Hawaiian Style Kalbi Ribs. Hello, YUM! They had posted the three specials of the day on FB but the Street Eat Sloppers were sold out. I’m going back just for those and this time I’ll be early.
Rich fired up that beast of a grill and Sharyn packed up my meals accompanied by sides of Asian Coleslaw and probably the best Macaroni Salad I’ve ever had. It was full of finely chopped veggies and wasn’t too mayonnaisee. Is that a word? It is now.
Time for a picnic in the car.
The Shrimp Skewers with Chimichurri Sauce was a great combination, the shrimp were fresh and sauce was laced with garlic and had a kick to it. This is good. Not recommended for a first date with the hopes of an end-of-date smooch but if you’re an adventurous first-dater…go wild.
The Hawaiian Style Kalbi Ribs were also fantastic. I didn’t even know what Kalbi Ribs were and just had to ‘google’ them. The combination of tender meat and the Asian inspired sweet and salty marinade it was a match made in heaven.
My plastic utensils went to work.
Car picnic at its finest
Yes, it is street food but let’s be clear that this is not junk food, people! These are handmade, unprocessed meals made from scratch and love of good food. Looking at that fire engine red grill you think grease and a heart attack. I’m all for a bit of indulging in the fine art of a serious burger and I’m sure Street Eats can serve one up but this is real food. One of their specials in rotation is Grilled Eggplant on Ciabatta with arugula, tomato and aioli. Okay, sign me up for that too.
They continue to add new items and will keep you updated. Keep tabs of them via Facebook, Twitter and regular visits.
Let’s talk new menu items. Get ready for this… Can you handle it? Ready? Street Eats is currently working on their ‘Pineapple Delight.’ Think grilled pineapple, blueberries, vanilla mascarpone cheese and a butter rum glaze. They will be rolling this dessert out when it gets a bit warmer. Summer can you hear me? Get here NOW.
And summer when you are here, you bet I’m coming for the Mac and Cheese Dogs or Elk Jalapeno Cheddar Brat. Maybe the Blue Moon Beer Brat or Wild Boar dog w/apricots and cranberries. Too many delicious decisions! Driving to the gym now.
Rich and Sharyn are the nicest of the nice and have a loyal following. Go find them and tell us what you think!
To be continued….(with cupcakes from Sweet Revenge!)
Price per special was $7.50.
