Yes Auroraites, it’s true, you do have a street food truck! Well OK, a dessert truck – but what a truck! To begin with, owners Kelley & Michael McGuire have converted a Mac tool van into a work of art that is called “Crush” that wants to take you back to your “California Dreaming” days. This truck screams “Surf’s Up! or as I like to call it “Cupcakes Up!” And Kelley, Mike and Crush keep this theme going throughout with Mike in his cool, breezy shirts, Crush painted in cool surf-side scenes, and Kelley whipping up cupcakes with names like Tequila Sunrise, Blue Hawaiian, Key Lime, and Pina Colada, just to name a few.
These three hit the streets of Aurora back on Cinco de Mayo day and haven’t stopped yet, bringing some of the most flavorful & colorful cupcakes to various corners of Aurora. I first chased them down at “Art on the Fax”, a monthly event held on Colfax just east of La Cueva and then had the pleasure of visiting their commissary (secret cupcake making place) to get some more info to pass onto Cupcake Lovers of Aurora and beyond. Kelley hails from California (getting the picture yet?) and has been the in the food service industry for over twenty years and is also a military veteran. She’s responsible for the wild awesome, cupcakes. Mike is a Colorado Native and considers himself a “jack of all trades.” Crush has to let Mike drive him around, since he’s too young to drive, so Mike is the wheel man too.
So enough of that stuff and on to the cupcakes. They’ve got some crazy names, but man do the flavors back up those names! The night we first met them we had to have a variety, I mean, variety is the spice of life, right? We tried the Caramel Apple, Red Velvet (I always try a new bakery’s red velvet, it’s my “standard” for comparision), and a S’Mores. Holy mackerel! Taking a bite of the Caramel Apple was like eating one of the apples I used to get at the county fair! Sweet, sugared, and with that small slice of dried apple on top? Yup, it was a bonafide Caramel Apple. Each bite was so flavorful. Red Velvet? What can one say about the iconic cupcake flavor these days? You can say “Yum-mo!” And then we attacked the S’Mores. Wait a sec. I live in an apartment – there’s no campfire here, but I taste S’Mores! Graham crackers, Chocolate, Marshmallow and all blended together so perfectly.
But I got to tell ya, on Saturdays, the cupcake menu is all about brunch! Blueberry Pancake, Mimosas, French Toast, Sangria & Lemoncello Cupcakes. You, heard me right, track these cats down on a Saturday and have brunch, all in the form of cupcakes.
Kelley, Mike and Crush are roaming the streets of Aurora (moving around enough to stay within the limits of the governing bodies) and are serving up some of the tastiest, wildest cupcake flavors I’ve had this year.
They do take Sundays & Thurdays off, and Crush is allergic to rain, so check them out on facecook or twitter before you head out.
So get out there Aurora and welcome “Cupcake Dreamin” to your streets, you will not be disappointed.
